Astride the Fall Line The entire state of Georgia blooms with a varied landscape of mountain forests and meadows, cotton fields and peach orchards, and evergreen stands of Georgia pine.
Once bare and jagged peaks in the north have eroded to well-worn mountaintops covered with forest, part of the Appalachian Range. To the northwest, mesas of the dry Cumberland Plateau sit on a bed of sandstone, shale, and limestone.
To the east is the Blue Ridge province, with its landscape of knobby peaks, narrow gaps, and streaming waterfalls in moist coves. The region between them eroded even further, creating the V-shaped Great Valley of northern Georgia.
The high shelf of rolling foothills and broad valleys that lies between the Appalachians and the flat coastal plain is the Piedmont Plateau. The narrow band where the Piedmont meets the coastal plain marks the “fall line,” the coastline of an earlier geological era. Along this line, Appalachian rivers spill from upland to lowland in a long run of waterfalls and rapids, below which smooth waters flow across the fertile coastal plain to the sea.
To the southeast, the Atlantic coastline is fringed with islands as wild now as before the days of states and borders. Georgia’s Atlantic Coast actually consists of three separate coasts: the sandy seaward beaches of the dozen or so barrier islands farthest east, the mainland coast to the west, and the wide tidal marshlands that flow between them.
