Most of Wisconsin is rolling hills of hardwood forests and pastoral dairy farms and orchards, but some unexpected and unusual areas are sprinkled throughout the state.
The first such surprise is the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. These 20 uninhabited islands hold rare virgin stands of old-growth hardwoods, as well as hawks, beavers, and bears.
On the mainland, the terrain rises into a plateau area known as the Superior Upland, where you can see rolling hills thick with maple and birch weaving a green tapestry backdrop for hundreds of lakes.
To the east, this plateau drops toward Lake Michigan and the Door County Peninsula, across Green Bay. Sometimes called the state’s thumb, this narrow length of land is fringed by 250 miles of rocky coastline.
To the west, the Superior Upland descends into the gorges of the Mississippi and lower Wisconsin rivers, with bluffs of limestone and sandstone towering up to 500 feet high. Over eons, the Wisconsin River eroded fantastic rock spires and arches out of the sedimentary stone in an area called the Wisconsin Dells.
In southern Wisconsin, dairy farms and fields provide a haven for migrating Canada geese and other waterfowl as well as resident pheasants.
