More about Delaware

Nearly all of Delaware sits on a mass of sand, gravel, and clay within a region called the Coastal Lowland. Only the northernmost tip of the state, which extends into the higher Piedmont region, does not. Most of the state’s population lives in the hilly highlands, leaving the lowland portion of the state for farms and wilderness.

Along the western shore of Delaware Bay, protected marshes attract migrating waterfowl in such numbers that the wetlands are sometimes blanketed with them. Some 100,000 greater snow geese and Canada geese – and untold numbers of other migrating birds – sojourn in Delaware. In late spring, black-bellied plovers, ruddy turnstones, red knots, and sandpipers arrive to feast on the tiny eggs of horseshoe crabs.

Visitors to the bay enjoy marine delicacies such as crabs and oysters – not to mention the pleasures of beachcombing.

South of the bay on Delaware’s Atlantic shore, waves pile sand into spits that take the brunt of ocean storms, leaving salt marshes on the sheltered side teeming with wildlife.

Inland, Carolina bays, round ponds of uncertain origin, dot the state and provide habitat for rare plants. And in southern Delaware, a swampland shared with Maryland holds stands of bald cypress – unusual this far north.
