In the Cumberland Plateau, along the state’s southeastern border, forests of oak, hickory, hemlock, and pine cloak the slopes of the Pine and Cumberland mountain ranges. Beneath the forests lie extensive beds of bituminous coal.
North-central Kentucky holds one region within another. The Knobs is a roughly horseshoe-shaped region of forested terrain that varies from cones to rounded hills and escarpments. Inside the horseshoe lies Kentucky’s Bluegrass region. Limestone has weathered into soil just right for growing rich grass. Thoroughbred horse farms take advantage of the grass, their white rail fences stitching neatly across level fields of green velvet.
To the south lies the Pennyrile (sometimes spelled Pennyroyle), famous for its sinkholes and caves, including Mammoth Cave. The center of this region contains a vast, treeless area which gives way to farmlands in the south, nearer the Tennessee border.
West of the Pennyrile, the Jackson Purchase is a place of cypress swamps and wetlands where egrets and great blue herons nest. Low hills interrupt the flatness, and woods flourish between the farms.
In the northwest, just along the Ohio River, is the Western Coal Field. Although much of this land has been strip-mined, the farmland along the Ohio River is as pastoral as any in the state.
