The landscape of Mississippi is as gentle as any the South has to offer. Even the roughest terrain, in the northeast corner, can hardly be called rugged, though the Appalachians’ southernmost foothills do reach into the state.
A wonderful way to see the heart of Mississippi is by driving the Natchez Trace Parkway between the far northeast and the southwest corner. At the southern end of the Trace, lovely antebellum homes in Natchez overlook the Mississippi River.
Worth a detour from the Trace is the Delta, the lowland north of Vicksburg. The Delta covers a broad area, spreading from the Mississippi River on the Louisiana border east into the heart of Mississippi at the Yazoo River. Cotton is still a prime crop of the rich soil deposited by the Mississippi River.
Far to the south on the Gulf Coast, marshes reach inland and islands lie just offshore. Two of Mississippi’s sea islands are wildlife refuges, sheltering alligators and migrating birds.
At the east end of the state’s shoreline, the Pascagoula River enters the Gulf. Some people call this the Singing River.
