Licensing for Travel Nurses in Texas

Texas is a Compact State

Texas participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). This means if you hold a multistate nursing license from another compact state, you can practice in Texas without obtaining a separate state license.

What This Means for Travel Nurses

  • Travel nurses with a compact license can start assignments more quickly.

  • If you’re from a non-compact state, you’ll need to apply for a Texas license. The process is straightforward and handled before your assignment begins.

  • Make sure your license is active and in good standing before starting your travel assignment.

Helpful Tips

  • Always verify your compact license eligibility and any Texas-specific requirements.

  • Check CE requirements if your assignment will extend beyond one year.

If you don’t hold a compact license:

  1. Temporary License Timeframe: Up to 15 business days; payment and application have to be processed
  1. Permanent License Timeframe: 4 weeks after all required items have been submitted and processed
